Cox's Bazaar, Oct 1 (bdnews24.com)—A senior ruling party leader on Monday warned that the people involved with the attacks on Buddhists temples and houses at Ramu in Cox's Bazaar would not be spared.

"Authorities have been ordered to identify those linked with the attacks at Ramu. None of those who instigated and launched the attacks (on the Buddhist locality) will be spared, no matter how powerful they are," Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif told a peace rally at Ramu Sadar Upazila in the afternoon.

He also urged all to work to protect communal harmony in the locality.

In an overnight carnage on Saturday, a mob of religious fanatics attacked and burned at least seven Buddhist temples and nearly 30 homes and shops at Ramu Upazila in protest against a Facebook posting allegedly defaming the holy Quran.

Later, on Sunday Hindu and Buddhist temples in Chittagong's Patia and Cox's Bazaar's Ukhia were also attacked.

Hanif said: "The person who posted the photo on Facebook insulting the Quran will be arrested. The administration has been ordered to ensure highest punishment for that person."

"We can wage a struggle to protect Islam. But we cannot loot, vandalise or torch (houses and temples) in the name of it. Islam does not teach us something like this...Islam is the religion of peace."

Speaking as the special guest at the programme, LGRD State Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak said: "The person who posted the photo defaming the Quran will be identified. But before finding him out, the trial of the culprits behind the attacks will take place."

"Those who carried out the attacks on the temples at Ramu and other areas have no religion," he added.

Earlier, Awami League leaders including Hanif and Nanak visited the scenes where the attacks on the Buddhists took place.
