Prof Mizanur Rahman
National Human Rights Commission Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman on Sunday alleged that the Ramu attack was not possible without the help of local influential quarter.
“The attack on the Buddhists community is not a mere attack on the minority but an attack on the whole Bangladesh,” Mizanur told newsmen at his office in the capital's Moghbazar area.
Mizanur also said it would not be fare to make the Ramu issue a political one.
The NHRC will recommend the government with some suggestions regarding arrest and punishment to the perpetrators, he said.
The rights body chief also expressed his hope that general people would not be harassed in the name of arrest.
About the prime minister’s Ramu visit, he said, “I am hopeful that her visit will help the community to get back to their confidence that they lost following the attack.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit Ramu on Monday.
A mob went on rampage in Ramu of Cox's Bazar in the night of September 29, leaving 12 Buddhists temples and monasteries and over 50 houses destroyed.
The violence was apparently triggered by a Facebook posting of a photo derogatory to the holy Quran.
