DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday questioned the acceptability of the opposition BNP‘s probe body report on the recent attacks on Buddhists in Ramu and Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar, terming the head of the committee a ‘great fraud’.
“It came out during the caretaker government that the BNP leader had opened 20 bank accounts in 20 different names with separate signatures for each of the accounts….what a ‘great fraud’ he is!” she said.

The Prime Minister made the remarks when leaders of Jatiya Sramik League met her on the occasion of its 43rd founding anniversary at her official residence Ganobhaban in the afternoon.

Hasina said the BNP leader (Moudud Ahmed), also the head of the BNP’s probe committee, had captured a foreigner’s house at Gulshan, and he was also convicted on charges of corruption and got presidential clemency.

“How the report of that committee could be acceptable to the people of Bangladesh? It’s the character of BNP to shift the responsibility anything on others,” she added.

The BNP probe panel formed to look into the recent attacks released their report today and found the government’s indirect instigation in the mayhem.

Moudud Ahmed, also a BNP standing committee member, came up with a 67-page investigation report of his party’s eight-member team at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

Criticising again the role of the local BNP MP for fanning the violence in Ramu, Hasina said the BNP should have to answer why the local MP fell asleep returning home after visiting the violence-prone areas.

The Prime Minister said her government always worked to ensure the rights of people of all religions. “The Awami League government has also ensured through the 15th amendment to the constitution that the people of all religions will perform their religious rituals freely in the country.

She said Awami League does not believe in hurting the religious sentiment of others and pointed out that the attack on the Buddhist community was carried out like a 71-style. “But, the Pakistani occupation forces hadn’t destroyed pagodas.”

The Prime Minister said an investigation is on to find the main clue to the outbreak of the brutal attacks.

Hasina also called upon all to remain alert about liars and those who embezzled the money of orphans, launched grenade attacks and hurled bombs, created militancy, unleashed terrorism in the country and do not believe in the country’s independence.

“They couldn’t tolerate this. So, they set fire to 300-year-old religious institutions …pagodas and used gunpowder,” the premier said adding that she had immediately directed the local administration, local AL leaders and workers, Army, Rab and police to bring the situation under control as she was abroad to attend the 67th UNGA in New York.

Hasina alleged that the local BNP MP had visited the violence-hit area at about 11.30 pm with his followers riding 30-40 motorbikes and vehicles. “Soon after he had left the place and fallen asleep at his home, the pagodas and houses of the Buddhist community were torched.”

Awami League Labour Affairs Secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj, Jatiya Sramik League president Shukkur Mahmud and General Secretary Sirajul Islam spoke on the occasion.
