Political parties and rights organisations on Tuesday continued their protests against the arson attacks on Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples at Ramu in Cox’s Bazar and in Chittagong.
The Workers Party at a meeting condemned the sectarian violence and demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.
The party leaders said a vested quarter was trying to disturb communal harmony in the country for political gains.
The attacks might have been perpetrated to create panic among the minority communities before the general elections, they said.
Chaired by president of the party Rashed Khan Menon, the meeting was attended, among others, by general secretary Anisur Rahman Mollick.
Jatiya Mukti Council leaders at a rally in front of the National Press Club alleged that the government was trying to hide the perpetrators.
They demanded immediate arrest of the attackers and their exemplary punishment.
Samiul Alam, Michel Chakma and Susen Chakma addressed the rally chaired by the party secretary Faiezul Hakim.
Bangladesh Nari Pragati Sangsad formed a human chain in front of the Press Club condemned the attacks on the minorities and asked the government to bring the culprits to book immediately.
Human Environment Rights Society also formed a human chain in the city, demanding steps to stop recurrence of communal violence.
Dhaka University Buddhist Students Sangsad also registered their protest at a human chain on the campus.
Young writers, artists and professionals also held a protest rally in front of the National Museum in the afternoon.
