New York, Oct 4 (bdnews24.com) – The North American Buddhist Community will demonstrate in front of the UN Headquarters in New York on Friday to protest against last week's hate attack on the Buddhists in Cox's Bazaar.

The platform announced the demonstration in a press conference on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning Bangladesh time) in Jackson Heights, New York.

The platform also demanded that a law safeguarding religious minorities be passed in Bangladesh.

The American branch of Bangladesh's Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad has expressed solidarity with the demonstration.

On Sep 29, a mob of religious fanatics vandalised, looted and torched for some five hours Buddhist temples, homes and shops at Ramu Upazila in protest against a Facebook posting allegedly defaming the Quran.

Later, on Sunday, Sep 30, the riot spread out as Buddhist temples, houses and Hindu temples in Ukhia, Teknaf and Chittagong's Patia were also vandalised and torched.

Leaders of the Buddhist community met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New York on Sep 29-30 to request protection of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

In a protest against the incident, a human-chain was formed on Monday in front of the headquarters of the New York's Times and a memorandum to the President was submitted through Consulate General in New York on Tuesday.
