Khaleda for high-level neutral body to probe Ramu violence

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Wednesday urged the government to constitute a high-level neutral investigation committee to find out the real culprits behind the arson attacks at Ramu and
others places and give them exemplary punishment.
She suggested that the probe committee might be a neutral judiciary committee with sitting judges or high-level neutral committee with retired judges.
Khaleda, leader of the opposition in parliament, made the demand when
Buddhist monks and religious leaders met with her at her Gulshan office in the capital at 9:00pm.
The BNP chief said if the government failed to find out the real perpetrators behind the violence at Ramu, Ukhia, Patia, her party
would initiate a move to find out the real offenders and punish them.
As the Buddhist community leaders expressed their apprehension about further attack on their property, Khaleda asked the government to ensure fulltime security so that Buddhist people could live with their families without any fear and none could dare to stage such heinous attacks.
She assured them of all-out cooperation from BNP.
Buddhist leaders including principal of Ramcoat Buddha Tirtha, Ramu,
Progga Bangsha Mohetharo, Dipananda Bhikhhu of Kolagaon, Patia and
Dipok Barua of Ghumdhung, Ukhia at the meeting described the arson attacks on Buddhist temples and plunder.
They said the police were inactive during the incidents and added that they would continue the tradition of thousands of years of communal
harmony.
One of them stressed the need for formation of peace committee comprising representative of every religion in the areas to maintain peace and check recurrence of any further violence.
They requested Khaleda to visit the violent-hit areas and appreciated formation of an investigation team by the BNP to probe the incidents.
They also put forth some demands including formation of relief fund
by BNP to help the affected families and raise the violent issue in
various international forum.
Khaleda said the report by the investigation team of BNP would be published soon and they would place it in various international forums.
She said after coming from China she would visit the violent-hit areas.
The BNP chief said they would extend all possible assistance and
cooperation to them so that affected families could start life afresh and the damaged temples could be repaired.
She asked the government to take step of rebuild the damaged
institutions of the Buddhists.
The BNP chairperson said they would find out why the incident took place and why police was silent. She said the government should take
action against those who failed to carry out their responsibility.
Khaleda neither the prime minister nor the opposition leader should blame any person without knowing and before the investigation.
BNP leaders Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Nazrul Islam Khan, among
others, were present at the meeting conducted by Dhaka University teacher Sukomol Barua.
